The Difference Between Family Life Education, Therapy, and Coaching

People often wonder about the difference between therapy and coaching but may not even be aware of family life education. Although there is a certain degree of overlap, understanding the differences can help you determine which is most appropriate for you and your family.

Family Life Education

Family Life Educators are trained in family science and use research-based strategies to strengthen family relationships and functioning. Their work is primarily educational and preventive—helping individuals and families build knowledge, anticipate challenges, and develop skills that promote resilience and well-being. Unlike therapy, FLE does not address deep psychological wounds, but instead equips families with tools to avoid common pitfalls and thrive across the life span.

Therapy

Therapists are licensed professionals trained to help clients process trauma, mental health concerns, and deep emotional pain. Therapy often looks into the past and inner psyche to diagnose and treat clinical conditions. Therapists may work with individuals who struggle to maintain daily functioning regardless of external circumstances. Therapy is the appropriate modality for addressing abuse, addiction, serious trauma, or other mental health disorders. Coaching and education should never attempt to provide these clinical services.

Coaching

Coaching is a future-focused, action-oriented partnership designed to help clients maximize personal and relational potential. It emphasizes self-reflection, accountability, and alignment with core values, operating from the belief that solutions reside within the client rather than the coach. Relationship coaches help clients work through challenges, clarify goals, and build stronger connections, but do not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. Coaching is best suited for clients who are functioning, motivated, and willing to take responsibility for growth. It is not appropriate for those unwilling to engage in self-reflection or who attribute their well-being solely to external circumstances.

"When my husband and I were working through a separation and trying to rebuild our marriage, Kiersten Wilson was exactly the coach we needed. One of the most powerful exercises she led us through was creating a marriage mission statement that gave me clarity about what I truly wanted and how to move forward. Her experience with divorce, separation, and blending families made her coaching style especially effective. With her support, I was able to rebuild my confidence and navigate some of the most difficult challenges in my marriage."
